Is it hard to make a guitar plectrum yourself?
Well. it depends how you plan to make your guitar pick. Many years ago I tried to carve a guitar plectrum our of piece of ebony. Since I didn’t have any machines, just manual tools, that was actually quite hard … although I have to say that I really liked the pick. (I also could have simply bought one – here’s my review of some wooden John Pearse plectrums).
It’s something else when we are talking about making DIY plastic picks.
There are some some tools on the market that allow you to simply punch your picks out of pieces of plastic like old (or new
) credit cards and the like. They look like regular staplers – just that they cut plectrum shaped holes out of the plastic
The two DIY plectrum machines that are the most popular ones are the Pickmaster and Pick Punch.
Here is a Video that shows the two pick makers in action.
Pick Punch is the clear winner. It’s much easier to punch the plectrums (or plectra as some like to say…) out of the plastic.
Where can I get Pick Punch to make my own Picks?
I found out that not too many stores carry the Pick Punch. I guess it’s still more of an individual thing to make your own plectrums, so not too many people buy the tools.
I found one nice shop that has it available: PICKBAY. Here is the direct Product Link.

Would like to set up a plectrum manufacturing unit. Is your machine a professional one.? what is the thickness it can cut.
Do you have any machines to write on picks?

Hi Paul,
thanks for your comment – but the Pickmaster is not “my machine”. I’m just writing about it here, since I think it might be a nice gadget for some readers. I’m just a blogger, not a manufacturer of machines
Kind regards & good luck with your business,
Tom
